How does acupuncture work?

Though the terminology is “foreign” and very different from the diagnostic system in modern medicine, Chinese diagnosis techniques are equally scientific and highly accurate. By identifying the imbalance in the body and applying the appropriate acupuncture points, harmony can be restored. Unlike modern medicine that focuses on a specific component of injury or disease, this traditional medicine addresses the whole system at the same time. The acute symptoms will be treated in addition to the underlying constitutional imbalance unique to each individual. Several millennia of success sit behind the development of this truly amazing medicine.

The goal of acupuncture therapy is to balance the natural opposing forces to create harmony, health and vitality. When we are in balance, we are most capable of reaching our highest potential. This traditional medicine from Asia focuses on prevention of illness and injury, creating health, and promoting longevity

What does an acupuncturist do?

During the initial exam questions are asked regarding health, symptoms and lifestyle. The pulses at each wrist are felt in three positions which correspond with the major organs in the body. The tongue is observed as it shows the state of the internal organ network functioning. Gathering this information helps the practitioner to effectively diagnose and detect any imbalance of Qi that may have contributed to a person’s health conditions. The practitioner can then create a well-structured treatment plan.

Once the imbalances of Qi are detected, an acupuncturist will place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints along meridian pathways which unblocks the obstruction and balance qi where it become unbalanced. Once this is done, Qi can more effectively circulate through the body providing nourishment to cells, organs, glands, tissues and muscles. This can eliminate pain and restore balance and harmony helping the body to heal itself.

Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are very fine~ about the thickness of a human hair. Unlike needles used for drawing blood or injection, acupuncture needles are solid. They separate the skin upon insertion rather than breaking or tearing the skin. There should be very little or no discomfort with needle insertion. Very rarely will the area of insertion ever bleed or bruise. For your safety, disposable needles are used exclusively.

Traditional Chinese Medical theory explains that human beings have a natural flow of energy through the body. The theory holds that pain and disease are caused by an imbalance or blockage of this energy, called Qi (pronounced chee). Acupuncture helps restore harmony to the flow of Qi and thus return the body to a healthy state.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually one treatment per week for a few weeks and then one to two per month until balance is achieved, but it depends on your condition. Many conditions can be alleviated very rapidly with acupuncture and herbs. Chronic issues may require treatment for several weeks or longer. Acute imbalances generally respond much faster. As in any form of medical care, the patient’s diet, determination and lifestyle will affect the outcome and course of treatment.

Acupuncture is a safe, effective and drug-free therapy that can help address a wide variety of common ailments and problems as well as prevent future disorders.
